Yasmin Shariff

Kilimanjaro Snack House

Born and raised in Tanzania, Yasmin Shariff immigrated to Canada at the age of 14. After dedicating years to raising her children and sending them to the University of British Columbia, Yasmin decided to chase her own dream. In Vancouver, she founded Kilimanjaro Snack House, which has been a cherished part of the culinary scene for an impressive 11 years and counting.

Kilimanjaro Snack House reflects Yasmin's commitment to preserving the flavors of home-cooked meals while adding her unique touch. The menu skillfully blends flavors from Africa and India, drawing inspiration from the culinary traditions of Gujarat, while also incorporating a hint of Omani influence from their historical rule over the coastal regions of East Africa. The result is a delightful fusion of flavors and techniques that transport diners across continents.

Yasmin's journey was profoundly influenced by remarkable women who played pivotal roles in her life. Her mother, a culinary matriarch in her own right, instilled in Yasmin a deep-rooted passion for cooking from an early age. Through her mother's nurturing guidance, Yasmin learned that the kitchen was not just a place to prepare meals, but a realm of creativity and empowerment where flavors were transformed into expressions of love and culture.

In addition to her mother, Yasmin found inspiration and guidance in a mentor who paved the way for female-owned restaurants at a time when there weren't many, especially those owned and operated by women of color. Her mentor, Parviz Dhanani, imparted invaluable lessons on entrepreneurship and operations, giving Yasmin the confidence to turn her dream of Kilimanjaro Snack House into a thriving reality.

In 2023, Kilimanjaro Snack House received Vancouver Magazine's prestigious "Gold" award in the category of "Best African and Caribbean Restaurant," a well-deserved recognition of Yasmin's dedication to creating and serving exceptional dishes that celebrate her rich heritage. Culinary talent runs in Yasmin's family; her son is a distinguished Red Seal chef and a graduate of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.

As the heart and soul behind Kilimanjaro Snack House, Yasmin Shariff continues to inspire and delight food enthusiasts, inviting them to savor a harmonious fusion of flavors and cultures with every bite.
